Israel: A Chosen Nation

Israel

A Chosen Nation

Israel is in the news almost every day. Why?

The average person might well ask, “What’s so important about Israel? and “Why should I be concerned about Israel?” To answer those questions, we have to go back to the beginning.

According to the Bible, God selected Israel to be a holy nation, distinct from all others [Deuteronomy 7:7-8], living according to God’s standards, serving as a light to the rest of the world, and drawing other nations to God [Isaiah 42:6].

God gave the people He chose their own specific land.

God promised a land to Abraham and his descendants [Genesis 13:16; 15:5]. And not just any land, but a specific land outlined in the Old Testament. This land is to be theirs forever. The land promised to Israel according to Scripture is more than Israel currently inhabits.

The land promised to Israel as an eternal covenant was called Canaan. God commanded Joshua to clear the land of its inhabitants who were idol worshipers. God did not want His people intermingling with them.

Israel did not clear the land as God had instructed and as a result their history has been a tumultuous one. Canaan, part of the land promised to Israel through Abraham by God, is the same geographic land now known as Palestine.

From its earliest history, Israel has endured seasons of rebellion against God, God’s judgment and His restoration.

Throughout its history the land known as Israel has been inhabited by many different peoples. The land was conquered and ruled by various empires, who deported large portions of the Jewish population to other lands.

The state of Israel was re-established in 1948, prompting a continuous wave of Jewish immigration back into their promised land. Even throughout their history, the Jewish people are the only people who have maintained their native language of Hebrew.

God promised that Israel would be a blessing to the nations [Genesis 22:18].

Israel has played a significant role in advancing global innovation, particularly in fields that directly impact quality of life. In technology,

Israeli engineers pioneered capsule endoscopy, a breakthrough in non-invasive medical diagnostics, and developed the first widely used instant messaging platform. Israel is a global leader in cybersecurity, agricultural technologies like drip irrigation, and high-tech startups that drive advancements in everything from microchips to digital health.

Israeli researchers have also made meaningful contributions to vaccine development, including work on the Hepatitis B vaccine, and they continue advanced biomedical research and healthcare solutions.

In the realm of cancer treatment and medical science, Israeli institutions have contributed to the evolution of targeted therapies and personalized medicine, helping refine how diseases like cancer are treated worldwide.

Israel has won 13 Nobel Prizes.

These innovations reflect Israel’s broader commitment to solving global challenges through creativity, research, and collaboration.

The state of Israel was re-established in 1948, prompting a continuous wave of Jewish immigration back into their promised land. Even throughout their history, the Jewish people are the only people who have maintained their native language of Hebrew.

Here are some final points to consider in the importance of Israel:

  • Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was born a Jew.
  • The first “Christian” church [Acts 2:42-47] was made up of Jews.
  • God has made Jerusalem the center of all nations [Ezekiel 5:5], “center” having both geographic and divine meaning.
  • The Book of Revelation [the final book of the Bible] focuses on Israel and the Jews [Revelation 7:4].
